How to Care for Your Cotton and Chiffon Dresses

Good fabrics last longer when they are looked after. These simple habits keep your cotton and chiffon dresses soft, fresh and true to colour.

Washing

  • Wash in cold water. Hot water can fade colours and cause slight shrinkage.
  • Turn embroidered or printed dresses inside out before washing.
  • Use a mild detergent and avoid bleach.
  • Wash dark colours and light colours separately for the first few washes.

Cotton

Cotton is forgiving. A gentle machine wash or a hand wash works well. Dry it in the shade rather than direct sun to protect the colour.

Chiffon

Chiffon is delicate. Hand wash it gently or use a mesh laundry bag on a delicate cycle. Do not wring it. Press the water out and lay it flat or hang it in the shade.

Embroidery and lace

Avoid scrubbing embroidered areas or lace hems. Gentle hand washing keeps the threads neat.

Drying

Dry in shade and avoid tumble drying. Heat is what shrinks and dulls fabrics most.

Ironing

Iron on a low to medium setting, on the reverse side. For chiffon, place a thin cloth between the iron and the fabric.

Storing

Hang dresses on padded or wide hangers, or fold them loosely. Keep them away from damp corners. For longer storage, use a breathable cloth bag rather than plastic.
