Best Dresses for Hot and Humid Weather in India
Share
When the heat and humidity set in, the right dress makes the difference between enjoying the day and counting the hours until you get home. Here is what to look for, and what we reach for ourselves.
1. Choose breathable fabrics
Pure cotton is the classic for Indian summers. It is soft, absorbent and lets air move through. Our Poppy polka dot midi and Iris schiffli dress are both pure cotton.
Cotton linen and cotton with a cotton lining add a little structure but stay light. See the Wisteria and the Jasmine.
Light chiffon is airy and moves with the breeze, which is why it works well for brunches and holidays. Try the Bluebell or the Lotus.
2. Pick a relaxed silhouette
A-line and fit-and-flare shapes skim the body instead of clinging to it, so air circulates and the fabric does not stick. A gathered waist or a tie-up waist lets you adjust the fit as the day goes on.
3. Mind the length
Midi and knee-length dresses cover enough for daytime outings while keeping your legs free. In the monsoon, a hem just below the knee is easier to manage than a floor-length one.
4. Go light on colour
Pastels, whites and soft prints reflect heat better than dark solids. They also look fresh in photographs. If you love black, choose a breathable cotton like Iris.
5. Small details that help
- Sleeveless or short sleeves for hot afternoons.
- A V-neck or square neckline lets heat escape.
- A lining adds comfort and keeps lighter colours opaque.
